Nights on the Soul©

“Mommy, mommy.”

“Diana is bleeding! She’s in her room. There’s so much blood, everywhere!”

Susan came running up the stairs after hearing her daughters’ screaming voice. Little Sarah had tears running down her chubby face. She shoved Sarah out of Diana’s room and slammed the door. The sight of her eldest daughter, clotted blood all over her arms, black red soaking into the white cotton bedspread, instantly sickened her in a way that only a mother could feel. The pink mini-dress Diana was wearing was also soaked with blood.

Dear Lord, she thought. What have I done to deserve this? What has possessed my lovely girl to take her own life? She grabbed at her daughter’s lifeless body and started slapping her face.

“Diana get up. Don’t do this to me! Diana, please!”

Oblivious to Sarah’s pleas to enter the room, she continued to slap and push Diana who offered no response. The girl was plainly dead. Upon hearing Sarah’s wailing in the hallway, she was at a loss, what do you tell a child of eleven about death. Not accidental death, either. Death on purpose.

She threw Diana back down on her bed in disgust and wiped at the dried substance gathering on herself.

And then she noticed in Diana’s hand was a note. It read:

D-

Come with me tonight and we shall flyaway forever. Faraway places await your every wish. They will not miss you for long. Let me guide you to my world. You will be my bride tonight.

D.

Susan crumpled the note and then ripped it to shreds. Who was this creep trying to steal her daughter? Didn’t he know he’d killed her? She obviously didn’t want to be with him, but why oh why did she have to leave us? Who is D? Diana had never mentioned a new boy. What did he do to her? Why was she lying here dead, gone to the world, gone for all the days of her life? Oh God, it hurts so bad.

“Mommy! Mommy, why is Diana dead? Who killed her? Was it the bogeyman? Diana said he came to her window last night. Did the bogeyman kill her? Did he? Did he?”

Susan looked once more at her daughter with regret then closed that chapter of her life and never opened it again.
